Along with the <strong>Academy of Fine Arts<\/strong>, it occupies a vast complex that extends from <strong>Via Battisti<\/strong> to <strong>Via Degli Alfani<\/strong>, from <strong>Piazza Santissima Annunziata<\/strong> to <strong>Via Ricasoli<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading_6c0214-63, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading_6c0214-63[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading_6c0214-63\"]{font-style:normal;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading_6c0214-63 mark.kt-highlight, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading_6c0214-63[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading_6c0214-63\"] mark.kt-highlight{font-style:normal;color:#f76a0c;-webkit-box-decoration-break:clone;box-decoration-break:clone;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading_6c0214-63 img.kb-inline-image, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading_6c0214-63[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading_6c0214-63\"] img.kb-inline-image{width:150px;vertical-align:baseline;}<\/style>\n<h2 class=\"kt-adv-heading_6c0214-63 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading_6c0214-63\">THE FIRST SETTLEMENT OUTSIDE THE CITY WALLS: THE HOSPITAL OF SAN MATTEO<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the medieval era, around the early <strong>1300<\/strong>s, in this area known as <strong>Cafaggio<\/strong>, which was outside the city walls until it was incorporated into the expansion of the second communal circle of <strong>1280<\/strong>, also known as <strong>Arnolfo<\/strong>&#8216;s circle, stood the ancient monastery of the <strong>Sisters of San Niccol\u00f2<\/strong> in<strong> Cafaggio<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It occupied the corner between <strong>Via dei Ciliegi<\/strong> (<em>now Via Alfani<\/em>) and <strong>Via del Cococomero<\/strong> (<em>now Via Ricasoli<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon, in 1391, on the opposite side of <strong>Via del Cococomero<\/strong>, on the corner of the current <strong>Piazza San Marco<\/strong>, a hospital named <strong>San Matteo di Cafaggio<\/strong> was built for men and women. It was commissioned by the <strong>banker Guglielmo<\/strong> (Lemmo) di V<strong>inci di Graziano Balducci<\/strong>, who wanted to donate a hospital to the community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The construction of the building was entrusted in <strong>1385<\/strong> to <strong>Romolo di Bandino<\/strong> and <strong>Sandro del Vinta<\/strong>, &#8220;<em>masters of stone and wood<\/em>,&#8221; whom he asked to erect a corner loggia on the square, following the example of the <strong>Bonifazio hospital<\/strong> in <strong>Via San Gallo<\/strong>. In <strong>1388<\/strong>, after various events, the banker Lemmo entrusted the same masters with renovating the monastery of the Sisters of <strong>San Niccol\u00f2<\/strong>, instructing them to reuse the existing structures of the old monastery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1410, the San Matteo Hospital was practically put into service. This urban layout, with its corresponding purpose, remained virtually unchanged until <strong>Grand Duke Leopold I<\/strong> of Lorraine arrived. The perspective map of Florence in <strong>1584<\/strong> by the Florentine cartographer Stefano Bonsignori (<em>Nova Pulcherrimae Civitatis Florentine Topographi<\/em>a) accurately shows the urban advent of <strong>Grand Duke Leopold I<\/strong> of Lorraine, an enlightened sovereign of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and a great reformer of the <strong>18th century<\/strong>, significant changes began in this part of the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was desired to establish a citadel of the arts to promote the cultural development of the grand ducal State and the economic growth with the 1493<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1784<\/strong>, the grand duke issued a decree known as &#8220;<strong>motuproprio<\/strong>,&#8221; stipulating that all existing drawing schools in Florence, including the ancient <strong>Academy of the Arts of Design<\/strong> founded in 1563 by <strong>Cosimo de&#8217; Medici<\/strong> and attended by the greatest artists of the time such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visituffizi.com\/giorgio-vasari\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vasari<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Bronzino<\/strong>, <strong>Ammannati<\/strong>, <strong>Sansovino<\/strong>, <strong>Giambologna<\/strong>, and<strong> Cellini<\/strong>, would be unified into a single Academy that would acquire the more modern classical name of <strong>The Academy of Fine Arts<\/strong>, &#8220;<em>all the schools belonging to Design, and the Academy that will preside over them<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, a gallery was decided to be created alongside it to house the ancient paintings being acquired. He entrusted the architect Bernardo Fallani with transforming and adapting it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1796<\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumsinflorence.com\/musei\/opificio_delle_pietre_dure.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Opificio delle Pietre Dure<\/a><\/strong> (<em>Workshop of Semi-Precious Stones<\/em>) was established inside the former convent of the Nuns, relocating from its original location at the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitflorencemuseums.com\/uffizi-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Uffizi<\/a><\/strong>, and later, in 1857, the music school, now the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory, was established as well, following a renovation project for the section of the building at the corner of the two streets carried out by architect <strong>Francesco Mazzei<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>19th-century<\/strong> planimetric representations show the two contiguous and united building complexes under the Institute of the <strong>Royal Academy of Fine Arts<\/strong>. It became annexed to the Royal Galleries and Museums, confirming the new direction of the Academy, which focused more on promoting contemporary art (<em>indeed, during that same period, Florence was experiencing one of the most fruitful moments of artistic production thanks to the Macchiaioli Movement<\/em>) rather than reproducing classical and past subjects according to the prevailing spirit at the time of the establishment of the Leopoldine school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the collection of artworks became the subject of preservation, documentation, and a testament to past historical periods primarily. They were brought indoors as they were at risk of degradation due to prolonged and continuous exposure to the external environment. These four sculptures, part of a series of six statues (<em>the first two are located at the Louvre Museum in Paris<\/em>), are more significant than life-size, depicted in various poses as prisoners, not wholly freed from the material by the artist and therefore unfinished, were carved by <strong>Michelangelo<\/strong> for <strong>Pope Julius II&#8217;<\/strong>s tomb in <strong>Rome<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until then, they had adorned the <strong>Buontalenti Grotto<\/strong> in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitflorencemuseums.com\/palazzo-vecchio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boboli Gardens<\/a><\/strong>, placed there by the <strong>Grand Duke Cosimo<\/strong> I, to whom they were donated by <strong>Leonardo Buonarroti<\/strong>, the great artist&#8217;s nephew, after his death. The new arrivals were placed after the vestibule of the entrance on <strong>Via Ricasoli<\/strong> in the first Gallery, later named the <strong>Gallery of the Prisoners<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They joined the famous group of <strong>Saint Matthew<\/strong>, already present in the<strong> Accademia<\/strong>, and were accompanied by the <strong>Piet\u00e0 from Palestrina<\/strong> (<strong><em>a marble group dramatically depicting the dead Jesus collapsing on his legs and supported by the Mother<\/em><\/strong>), which came from the Chapel of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitromemuseums.com\/st-peters-basilica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barberini Palace<\/a><\/strong> in Palestrina near Rome, following its acquisition by the Italian State in 1939.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the new arrivals, the Gallery of ancient paintings acquired an organic value in the artistic life of <strong>Michelangelo Buonarroti<\/strong>. It became the most abundant collection of the great master preserved in a museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this period, under the direction of <strong>Cosimo Ridolfi<\/strong>, the <strong>Accademia Gallery<\/strong> underwent a new transformation, mainly affecting the collection of paintings. They were named so because they housed the plaster cast of an ancient statue, one of the Dioscuri of <strong>Monte Cavallo<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were designated to accommodate large altarpieces from the <strong>16th-century<\/strong> Florentine period. Following these transfers, the Gallery lost any connotation of a modern gallery and became, after this episode, the <strong>Accademia Gallery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the <strong>1950<\/strong>s, under the direction of Luisa Becherucci, the reorganization of the ground floor rooms began with the Colossi halls. Numerous examples of <strong>Florentine<\/strong> painting on panel and canvas from the <strong>15th<\/strong> and 16th centuries, including works by renowned masters such as <strong>Paolo Uccello<\/strong>, <strong>Botticelli<\/strong>, <strong>Perugino<\/strong>, <strong>Filippino Lippi<\/strong>, and <strong>Ghirlandaio<\/strong>, were displayed on the walls.
