PALAZZO VECCHIO – PALAZZO DELLA SIGNORIA
Palazzo Vecchio ( Palazzo della Signoria ) was built as a palace and served as an impregnable fortress during turbulent times. It was completed in 1314 after construction began in 1299. An architect renowned in the Renæssance, Arnolfo di Cambio, constructed the palace.
As Firenze was named the temporary capital, the palace gained much more significance and became Italy’s seat of power from 1865 til 1871. As the residence and office of Firenze‘s mayor since 1872, den Palazzo Vecchio serves as the city council and office of the mayor.
Romanesque architecture was incorporated into the old palace, built between 1299 og 1314, med Gotiske elementer such as windows og skulpturer.
As a result of artistic masonry og bricks being laid on the palace‘s front in 1330, it became more aesthetically pleasing. Den Fountain of Neptune, commissioned in 1565, is another later addition to Palazzo Vecchio.
This palazzo has numerous statues on its front, including a replica of Michelangelo's David, Adam og Eveog Herkules og Caucus, all created by Bandinell.
