PALAZZO VECCHIO – PALAZZO DELLA SIGNORIA
Palazzo Vecchio ( Palazzo della Signoria ) was built as a palace and served as an impregnable fortress during turbulent times. It was completed in 1314 after construction began in 1299. An architect renowned in the Renaissance, Arnolfo di Cambio, constructed the palace.
As Florence was named the temporary capital, the palace gained much more significance and became Italy’s seat of power from 1865 to 1871. As the residence and office of Florence‘s mayor since 1872, the Palazzo Vecchio serves as the city council and office of the mayor.
Romanesque architecture was incorporated into the old palace, built between 1299 and 1314, with Gothic elements such as windows and sculptures.
As a result of artistic masonry and bricks being laid on the palace‘s front in 1330, it became more aesthetically pleasing. The Fountain of Neptune, commissioned in 1565, is another later addition to Palazzo Vecchio.
This palazzo has numerous statues on its front, including a replica of Michelangelo‘s David, Adam and Eve, and Hercules and Caucus, all created by Bandinell.
